I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of International Affairs at the University of Georgia. Before joining UGA, I was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University's Weatherhead Center for International Affairs.
I study authoritarianism, democratization, and contentious politics, with a regional focus on the Middle East and North Africa. My research has been published in the American Political Science Review and the Journal of Comparative Politics, and my commentary has appeared in Foreign Affairs and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
My book project examines the survival of minority-dominated autocracies, utilizing a mixed-methods approach. I draw on a novel dataset of all minority-dominated regimes from 1900 to 2015 and interview data based on my fieldwork in Sudan, Bahrain, Lebanon, and London (UK).
I received my PhD in Political Science from the University of Toronto in 2025. Prior to my PhD studies, I worked as a journalist in Syria and Lebanon. I've written for some of the most prominent local and international media outlets, including Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the Institute for War & Peace Reporting, Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, Almodon, and Al-Arab.
